Two interesting posts that I’ve seen recently.

First one from Annals of Wu who alerted us to Chinesepod starting Shanghainese podcasts and lessons soon.

Here’s a quote:

“Thus they will be (language-focused) extra content aimed at bringing more insight to Chinese life and culture. In honor of the city ChinesePod calls home, we will begin with Shanghainese. We hope to move on to beijinghua and more, but we’ll need your input to help decide which dialects deserve a close look!”

So there you have it. We’ve taken too much from Chinesepod and they want to get in on our gig. Just kidding. No, we’re happy that Chinesepod will try their hand on Shanghainese. The question is: will it be on the pay side or the FREEBIE side??

This is the best way to connect with MandMx.com. We post our cartoon links there and the occasional comment. This is also a great way to ask questions about a cartoon that you don’t understand. Perhaps readers who see your questions can also answer the questions!

This is our site on YouTube where you can see all our videos of our little boy studying Chinese.

7. YouKu

The Chinese version of YouTube. This has all our videos of our little boy studying Chinese where all of Mainland Chinese can see them.

CNNGo has been a late comer to the world of the China Blogosphere but they are really a great source for info about Shanghai and Shanghainese.

One of their articles the other day really sheds light onto young Shanghainese and their motivations for getting married and motivations for not getting married or their motivations for waiting to get married.

In Shanghai a house equals marriage and marriage equals a house. But marriage in Shanghai doesn’t end with just a house:

“In a survey recently release by Tencent on pre-marriage costs in six major Chinese cities (the costs involved in buying a house, house decoration, home appliances, furniture, a car, a wedding banquet, the honeymoon and the cost of gift and dinner), Shanghai came top, costing an average of RMB 1.4 million per couple.”
