What do you mean am I paraphrasing? I found this on Sina Weibo, it was going around, and MX and I translated it into English. Have you read any Lin Yutang? He’s awesome!
Thank you M and MX. I am writing a thesis on Lin Yutang and his humour and earthy philosophy of life are essential elements of his character. An English adage springs to mind:
‘Laugh and the world laughs with you; weep and you week alone.’
@Roslyn Joy Ricci, OH I would love to read your thesis. I discovered him a couple years ago while in China and was excited to find his books in China IN ENGLISH! I devoured his “My Country My People” book and really liked it. I’m sure we’ll do more of his quotes in the future!

Sorry about the delay. Mu brother died and humour left me … almost … so I have taken time out of study to sort my life out. My thesis is left for the present, however, if you type Roslyn Joy Ricci into GOOGLE search engine the first link will give you a pdf of my paper on Lin Yutang and his importance to global humour – a paper presented at the Asian Studies Association of Australia last year. It may inspire you to produce more bilingual cartoons based on LYT and which I shall happily advertise in my thesis. You are proving two points that I adhere to:
1) bilingual produce doubles the impact and
2) Lin Yutang left a lasting legacy of common sense humour
