    The free market has nothing to do with liberty and freedom. It’s perfectly possible to have a very capitalistic economy under a totalitarian government. Franco did that, and the CCP is doing that to an extent.

    That’s not to say that capitalism or free markets are bad, but I don’t think they are anything close to an answer for everything. There need to be regulations if you are going to protect the environment and disadvantaged groups. There needs to be assistance for things like health care and basic needs. Private buisiness are good at keeping the economy moving as long as there is competition (and a little smart regulation can make sure that competition doesn’t disappear), but they aren’t necessarily interested in people’s welfare or the social good.

    GAC, thanks for your comments. I don’t agree 100% with them but thanks all the same. Just like JFK said, “A rising tide lifts all boats.” No, the free market is not the best choice. But of all the other choices…it’s the most humane.
