This has been a great week for Shanghai and Shanghainese. Obama went to China this week and Shanghai was all over the news. The best part of the week though was when Obama actually attempted to speak Shanghainese. I say attempted because it wasn’t the greatest but at least he tried. What did he say? look at the picture. Basically it’s “HELLO” or “Ni Hao” in Shanghainese. Good thing he didn’t say what we learn in today’s lesson.
Here is the CHINA REAL TIME REPORT from the Wall Street Journal which did a great job by Sky Canaves and James Areddy who blogged simultaneously at the speech. Both have a different entry at the same time. I like how different the entries are:
1:09 p.m.: He asked Huntsman how to say hello in Shanghainese. –James T. Areddy
1:09 p.m.: Obama says “hello” in Shanghainese.–Sky Canaves
Here’s the link to the video. He speaks at 7:28 in the video after he is introduced and prompted on how to say “NONG HAO”. Don’t watch the whole 85 minutes though! Yikes!
Here are a number of other links to Chinese websites about Obama speaking Shanghainese.
