The Milk Powder Scare
Everyone is talking about Milk Powder or 奶粉 in Chinese. Today I don’t mean to poke fun at the situation because it is just so sad. But this situation has actually hit a bit closer to home than I would like.
When our boy was born back in December we started him on milk powder for a number of reasons. Reasons I don’t have to go into here and now but he was an avid drinker of milk powder. Relatives and friends who would come to see us with the new baby always came with some gifts. Some of the gifts were diapers but the majority of the gifts included tins of milk powder.
My wife and I were trying to remember where that lone tin of SAN LU or THREE DEER 三鹿 came from and not only that but who drank more than one third of it. My mother in law was beside herself when she heard of the news and immediately found the tin and asked both of us.
“Who had the milk powder here.”
“I’m sure it was me. No need to worry mom. I think it was me.”
“We didn’t give it to the boy?”
“No, I’m pretty sure that I drank it. Do you remember earlier? I bought western cereal and we didn’t have milk and since I didn’t want to waste all this milk powder, I just used this stuff. It was nasty but I didn’t care.”
So, why did we NOT use this specific milk powder? Easy. We only had one tin!
